A day excursion in itself, and definitely not to be missed, is the National Palace Museum. Located half an hour north of the city, it houses some 600,000 artifacts, catalogued at the Forbidden City in Beijing, which were removed and guarded by Chiang Kai Shek's minions during a perilous 15 year journey through China and finally to Taiwan. There, they were stored in underground bunkers until a modern museum could be erected. Now, the National Palace Museum is the single most important repository of Chinese fine art in the world. Porcelain, jade, scrolls and bronze, all of the finest quality, are on display year round.
