North of the city is the pleasant drive up Yangming Mountain. You will pass by the villas and houses of wealthy Taiwanese and expatriates working for foreign enterprises. You will also pass the University of Culture. From this area, you can take a detour to Seven Stars Mountain. There is a pleasant hiking path here, identified in several popular guidebooks. There are trails and a running stream with small waterfalls which makes for a perfect picnic area. Be warned, when all the flowers are in full blossom in the spring it can get quite crowded.
Continue driving up the mountain to Matsau. The winding road will take you through some truly breathtaking scenery, making you quickly forget that only 45 minutes ago you left behind a polluted and crowded city. Terraced tea and vegetable plantations appear by the side of the road as you drive to a pass in the mountains. Beyond this point you will start descending along the winding road and, on a clear day, will be able to see the golden beaches of Taiwan's north coast
